What is a silver lining on a cloud as referred to in the saying?

Clouds have many bright shades but a silver one? Where does this saying come from and why silver?

It comes from the fact that if it is just a single cloud and the sun is streaming behind it, the edges of the cloud glow bright grey, kinda silvery. So it's connected in that if the cloud passes then the sun is going to come out and it'll be sunny, just like if a trouble in your life (the cloud) passes then the sun is always there behind it and it'll eventually shine through and something nice will happen.
