what happens when you don't put glass art in a kiln after the piece has been blown?
In general terms, you create stress in the body of the glass that may immediately cause cracks, or a lot of time can pass and one day the piece cracks. The process of cooling glass is called annealing. There are also many reasons that stress may be in glass.
As glass cools from temps above 1100F to below, it transforms from a "liquid" like substance into a "solid" like substance. It is during this transition zone that one type of stress must be eliminated for the finished piece to be stress free. Different thicknesses and different types of glass all require their own particular time through this transition zone. After the transition zone down to room temperature you must insure that the glass cools at an even rate throughout the body to eliminate stress caused from uneven cooling. If I was cooling a piece with thickness variation between 1/4 inch and 3/4 inch, I would base my transition calculations upon the 3/4 inch thickness.
However, if you want to make very small,1/8 inch or less thick pieces (like beads), you can get a bucket of vermiculite and submerge the finished piece for about 45 min and you should be ok. But, I would not recommend this for different colors mixed together. Lastly, you could also just buy colored pyrex glass which does not need to be annealed.
